Bollywood’s romance with the bicycle
There is a certain romance in the slowness of a cycle. Not only has the cycle featured in some of the most romantic Bollywood songs like Pukarta Chala Hun Main and Main Chali, it has also made a sparkling appearance as the hero in films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Here’s a look at Bollywood romancing with the cycle:
Dil Dhadhakne Do
What blossoms through unsaid words in a pool, takes flight when Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma take on the roads of Istanbul on their cycles. And what can be more exciting than getting to know the person you’ve just fallen for, paddling away in the bylanes of one of the most beautiful cities.
Bhaskor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan) finds emotions in his motions. But when that doesn’t happen, he takes flight of freedom on a cycle as he heads to the streets of Kolkatta just by himself reliving his days. And as he tells his daughter (Deepika Padukone), he gets the ‘best motion ever’ the following morning.
His cycle is more than just a mode of transport in the film. Not only does Barfi run away from the cops on his cycle, he also takes his beloved for romantic rides in the woods. And it’s the cycle which breaks down just in time showing his ‘place’ in the society as he faces rejection for his marriage proposal.
He (Aamir Khan) descends from a land far-far away and lands on a cycle with Anushka Sharma. Not only do they take on the stereotypes of this world together, but head on for an adventurous run as the ‘out of this world’ phenomenon, lovingly called PK, falls in love with his driving (riding the cycle) force.
If you thought geeks know no romance, Ra.One sure stands to change your ideas. Crooning Dildaara to his wife, Shah Rukh Khan take his beloved on a tandem bicycle ride with curls of his hair (yes, indeed he wears a wig) doing just as much talking as does his signature romantic smile.
What’s romance without little bit of ruthna-manana. And Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor find a tandem bicycle to woo their respective heroines, much before their romances is deflated (read the tire of their cycle) by a well targeted hair pin. But nothing deflates their love quest.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
Probably the biggest cycling glory Bollywood has ever witnessed, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar has Aamir Khan, a young man who takes everything in life lightly, transform into a champion as he wins the final cycle race. And while Aamir comes out as a winner, the cycle sure is the hero of the film.
Salman Khan has his own ways of doing things. And he does just that in his film Kick when he gets down from his invincible cycle just in time to have a near death brush with an incoming train. And this after he takes on the city cops and gives them a run for their money on his cycle
Jab We Met
From train, to a taxi, bus and even a cycle, the film is just as much about the journey as it is about love between Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan while on the move. The story gets a dash of romance as the two paddle their way through the roads en-route to discovering love for each other.
